Why I Chose the Walled Garden: An Indie Author’s Honest Take on Kindle Unlimited (KU)

Hello, Fellow Bookworms and Indie Authors,

When I launched my debut novel, SIR..., a dark academia romance that dives into the psychology of control, the first major business decision I had to make was a tough one:

Amazon Exclusive, or "Go Wide?"

For those outside the publishing world, "Going Wide" means selling your ebook everywhere—Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play, Barnes & Noble, etc. "Amazon Exclusive" means enrolling in the KDP Select program, which includes putting your book into Kindle Unlimited (KU), but locks your ebook onto Amazon for 90 days at a time.

As an indie author who values reach and independence, this decision was agonizing. Here is my honest breakdown of why I ultimately chose the "walled garden" of Kindle Unlimited for SIR....

1. The Numbers Don’t Lie: The Sheer Volume of E-Readers

The single biggest factor is simple market reality: Amazon holds the undisputed monopoly on the ebook and e-reader market, especially in the US.

While I would love to reach the niche Apple or Kobo reader, the vast majority of e-readers are on Kindle devices, and a massive percentage of voracious readers subscribe to Kindle Unlimited. My goal as a debut author is not just to sell books, but to be discovered.

By going into KU, I put my book in front of millions of readers who are actively looking for new titles to binge for free (as part of their monthly subscription). This visibility, especially for a first-time author, is invaluable and simply cannot be matched by going wide.

2. The Power of the Page Read

In Kindle Unlimited, authors are paid based on the number of pages read (KENP). This payment model is a huge benefit for a debut author with an intense, character-driven book like SIR...:

  • Zero-Risk Trial: A reader can borrow the book without paying anything extra. If they start it and love the Matthews vs. Lydia dynamic, they are highly likely to finish it.

  • A Focus on Retention: I get paid for every page, meaning my focus shifts from just the click (the sale) to the retention (the quality of the story). It incentivizes me to keep the psychological tension high right to the very end!

3. The Algorithm Advantage (Love It or Hate It)

KDP Select gives authors valuable promotional tools that are exclusive to the platform. These include Kindle Countdown Deals and Free Book Promotion Days.

When you are exclusive, Amazon's algorithm rewards you by prioritizing your book in search results, especially when you are driving borrows through KU. For a book that relies heavily on discoverability (like a new psychological thriller), this algorithmic push is a game-changer. It helps new readers find SIR... via recommended lists far more easily than if it were competing across five different retailer websites.

4. Acknowledging the "Monopoly" Concern

Let me be clear: I don't love the concept of a monopoly, and it goes against the spirit of independence that defines an indie author. Every writer hopes for a world where all platforms offer equal opportunity.

However, as a business owner, I have to prioritize the best route for my book's success. For now, Kindle Unlimited offers the widest path to discovery, the best payment model for engagement, and the promotional tools needed to break through the noise.

The Bottom Line

Choosing Kindle Unlimited was a strategic choice to maximize the reach of SIR... and put it directly into the hands of the readers who want it most.

If you are a KU subscriber, you can read SIR... for FREE right now! The link is in my bio. Thank you for making this choice a successful one!
